Local Earth Social ~ Garbage Warrior ~ Friday, March 1st

The Local Earth Collective invites you to join us for our monthly social on the 1st Friday of every month at the World Beat Center! (March 1st / 6:30-10:30PM)

Intention – Coming together as community to celebrate, learn, share, educate & inspire! Each month will have a theme focused on a specific element of sustainable community development & healthy lifestyle.

Eat some tasty food made with love… laugh with old friends… and get to know new eco-minded friends in San Diego!  The World Beat Center serves delicious vegetarian food.  We will also have a food sharing table, so please feel free to bring an organic vegetarian potluck item to share if you wish!

The element of community we are focusing on for March is ‘Shelter’.  Several local organizations that are doing great work in this area will be joining us to give a short presentation on their current projects (4 Walls International & Rebuild Global).  After the presentations we will show the movie Garbage Warrior“The epic story of radical Earthship eco architect Michael Reynolds, and his fight to build off-the-grid self-sufficient communities.”

This is a ‘leave a positive trace’ event and we ask that every possible effort is made to create no waste… so please use reusable containers for food and beverages… the Earth thanks you!!!

Dana Middle School Nutrition & Garden Education Program (2 internships available)

localearthsprout

Dana Middle School Nutrition and Garden Education Program
Local Earth is working with the Dana Middle School to help implement the Nourish curriculum.  This curriculum actively engages middle school students in a meaningful conversation about food and food systems.  The activities give students opportunities to reflect on current food practices, to explore more sustainable ones, and to link their learning to relevant action.  In addition to teaching the Nourish curriculum Local Earth is working to build a garden and composting system on school grounds to provide a hands on learning experience for students and teachers.  As part of the garden program Local Earth hopes to demonstrate the full cycle of food by composting cafeteria waste into rich soil which will be used to grow healthy organic produce that the students can eat.

Local Earth Dana Middle School Interns
Local Earth is looking for two interns to be part of the Dana Middle School Nutrition and Garden Education Program.  Interns will be involved with teaching the Nourish curriculum and working with students, teachers, and the local community in the Dana Middle School garden.  Teaching experience is desired, but not necessary.  However a love of earth’s natural systems, children, gardening and good food are a must.  Interns must provide a clean LiveScan and pass a TB test prior to working on school grounds.

The film shows in disturbing detail the many health hazards of this potentially dangerous technology. Adding to the film’s power and hopeful message are the many testimonials from health professionals and individuals who describe the benefits of eating a non-GMO diet. All Americans who are concerned about the foods they eat should see this film.” – Ken Roseboro, editor and publisher, The Organic & Non-GMO Report and The Non-GMO Sourcebook, and author of Genetically Altered Foods and Your Health.

The film is about 90 minutes, around 9:30 PM we will discuss the film and local projects that we can support as a community to create a more healthy & sustainable local food system.

This is a ‘leave a positive trace’ event and we ask that every possible effort is made to create no waste… so please use reusable containers for food and beverages… the Earth thanks you!!!
